Catching Your Breath: How To Use A Peak Flow Meter

A peak flow meter is a small device used to measure how much air you can exhale. It is small enough to fit in your hand. Peak flow meters are an inexpensive and effective tool for asthma sufferers.

There are a variety of different kinds of peak flow meters. Some are designed for children and some for adults. Beyond that, there are many different kinds, so talk to your doctor about which peak flow meter is most suitable for you.

Peak flow meters are good for people who have moderate or severe asthma. Peak flow meters help you monitor how effective your current treatment is in treating the disease. If you have a mild case of asthma and the medication your doctor prescribes works, it's unnecessary. A peak flow meter can help you decide when it is time to change treatment.

A peak flow meter comes in handy especially when:

-Your asthma fluctuates. Many people who suffer from asthma notice that their symptoms worsen or get better over time. When this happens, you really need to change your medication and treatment. A peak flow meter can help you keep an eye on it reliably.

-You have an asthma attack. The peak flow meter can tell you and your doctor how severe the attack is. This might be important in treatment and prevention of further attacks.

-You are not sure what triggers your asthma. A peak flow meter can help you determine what specific allergens are causing your allergy symptoms. When your lung capacity is low, you know that something is irritating your lungs.

Using Your Peak Flow Meter

Peak flow meters are easy to use. First, make sure the marker sits at 0. Get rid of any gum or food in your mouth.

Put your lips tightly around the mouthpiece. Stand up straight and take a deep breath. Make sure nothing is in the way of the mouthpiece, like your tongue.

Now, blow. When you blow into your peak flow meter, give it a good, fast blast or air. Don't breathe long and slowly. Make it a short blast of air.

The marker will move up the scale and tell you how much air you have.

Each time you use it, be sure to do 3 trials. Blow once, check the marker, and then do it 2 more times. This is necessary in order to get an accurate reading. The HIGHEST rating, not the average, is the one you should look at. This will give you an accurate rating.

Keep track of your peak flow rates. It is best to write it down on a chart that you can show your doctor. You should also measure your peak flow at the same time each day. Your doctor can help you decide what time is best. Sometimes it is recommended that you check your peak flow before and after you take your medicine.

There is a standard for each age, race, sex and height that you can check your peak flow against. If it shows that you are abnormal, talk to your doctor about changing medications.

Ask your doctor about peak flow meters, and make sure you are using it correctly. A peak flow meter can be an invaluable tool for treating your asthma.
